 Dr. Jiyoung Kim

I enjoy working with students of all ages and levels. I have had opportunities to teach students from a variety of backgrounds both culturally and musically for over 15 years, which has enhanced my understanding of different learning styles and needs of each student. I try to incorporate a wide variety of genres into my teaching, while using traditional methods, to create a learning environment that is fun, encouraging, and motivating.  I am a member of the Texas Music Teachers Association (TMTA) and the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), which provides opportunities for performances and competitions for my students.

While maintaining a piano studio for private lessons since 2014, I taught at St. Barnabas Center for the Arts in MN as a piano instructor and served as a lecturer in music at St. Catherine University in St. Paul, MN. My teaching experience also includes classroom teaching. I taught class piano for both music majors and non-music majors at the University of Minnesota as a graduate instructor from 2008 to 2011. I relocated to McKinney, Texas in July of 2022.

I won the first prize in the Westminster Choir College Piano Competition in 2005, and received a certificate of recognition from the American Protégé International Piano and String Competition in 2017 for the achievement in the field of teaching music and presenting students to perform at Carnegie Hall.

I have earned degrees from the University of Minnesota (D.M.A., Major in Piano Performance), Indiana University, Bloomington, IN (M.M., Major in Piano Performance), 2005 Ewha Womans University, Seoul, Korea (M.M., Major in Piano Performance), and Kyungwon University, Seongnam, Korea (B.M., Major in Piano Performance).
